THE THINKER

When conceived in 1880 in its original size (approx. 70 cm) as the crowning element of The Gates of Hell, seated on the tympanumThe Thinker has entitled The Poet. He represented Dante, author of the Divine Comedy which had inspired The Gates, leaning forward to observe the circles of Hell, while meditating on his work. The Thinker was therefore initially both a being with a tortured body, almost a damned soul, and a free-thinking man, determined to transcend his suffering through poetry. The pose of this figure owes much to Carpeaux’s Ugolino (1861) and to the seated portrait of Lorenzo de’ Medici carved by Michelangelo (1526-31).

While remaining in place on the monumental Gates of HellThe Thinker was exhibited individually in 1888 and thus became an independent work. Enlarged in 1904, its colossal version proved even more popular: this image of a man lost in thought, but whose powerful body suggests a great capacity for action, has become one of the most celebrated sculptures ever known. Numerous casts exist worldwide, including the one now in the gardens of the Musée Rodin, a gift to the City of Paris installed outside the Panthéon in 1906, and another in the gardens of Rodin’s house in Meudon, on the tomb of the sculptor and his wife.

CONCERN AND HOME-KNITTED DISHCLOTHS

Having A Best Friend

A story tells that two friends were walking through the desert. During some point of the journey, they had an argument, and one friend slapped the other one in the face.
The one who got slapped was hurt, but without saying anything, wrote in the sand;
They kept on walking until they found an oasis, where they decided to take a bath. The one who had been slapped got stuck in the mire and started drowning, but the friend saved him. After he recovered from the near drowning, he wrote on a stone;
“Today my best friend saved my life.”
The friend who had slapped and saved his best friend asked him;
“After I hurt you, you wrote in the sand and now, you write on a stone, why?”

life

Once upon a time, a daughter complained to her father that her life was miserable and that she didn’t know how she was going to make it. She was tired of fighting and struggling all the time. It seemed just as one problem was solved, another one soon followed.
Her father, a chef, took her to the kitchen. He filled three pots with water and placed each on a high fire.
Once the three pots began to boil, he placed potatoes in one pot, eggs in the second pot and ground coffee beans in the third pot. He then let them sit and boil, without saying a word to his daughter.
The daughter moaned and impatiently waited, wondering what he was doing. After twenty minutes he turned off the burners.
He took the potatoes out of the pot and placed them in a bowl. He pulled the eggs out and placed them in a bowl. He then ladled the coffee out and placed it in a cup.
Turning to her, he asked. “Daughter, what do you see?”
“Potatoes, eggs and coffee,” she hastily replied.
“Look closer,” he said, “and touch the potatoes.” She did and noted that they were soft.
He then asked her to take an egg and break it. After pulling off the shell, she observed the hard-boiled egg.
Finally, he asked her to sip the coffee. Its rich aroma brought a smile to her face.

Getty Villa + Getty Center, Los Angeles

The Getty Museum is spread over two lavish campuses. The most extravagant, the original Getty Villa in Malibu, is a modern recreation of a First-century Roman villa built by oil tycoon J Paul Getty. The villa houses a world-class collection of Greek, Roman and Etruscan antiquities. The Getty Center, which opened on a hillside in Brentwood in 1997 and cost $1.3 billion, looks more like a giant white pharmaceutical plant and houses a world-class collection of American and European photographs, European art and furniture.

Musées Royaux de Beaux Arts

Without making a song and dance about it, this collection is a showcase for the brilliance of Belgian art. It begins with the Flemish “primitives”, the late-medieval pioneers in oil painting, celebrated for their intense attention to detail. It then leads through Pieter Brueghel the Elder and the Younger to Rubens, master of dramatic composition, and Antony van Dyck and Jacob Jordaens.
In the late 19th century, Belgium was a center of Symbolism, producing work of haunting beauty and compelling weirdness. And then came the great surrealist René Magritte, to whom a whole wing of the museum has recently been devoted. Other great names in the history of art are represented too, but it is the Belgians who make the deepest impression.

Secret Gems of the Venetian Lagoon

The glory of the most romantic city on the planet is withering. Venice may be losing its authenticity with cheap souvenirs mass produced and skyrocketing charges at restaurants and hotels, not to mention the periodic flooding, but if you are seeking the pure essence of La Serenissima, the lagoon has many bewildering wonders to experience.
This 55,000-hectare stretch of water is the largest wetland in Italy and one of the most important coastal ecosystems in the Mediterranean. The environmental and its heritage was recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site, and it envelops various hidden gems and islands that a lucky few can explore.
Adventures in the secluded Venetian Lagoon is often best with a proper chaperone. Allison Zurfluh, a native and local expert, says, “With its wetlands and waterways draped in pinks and greens and golds, its soaring birds and warm-hearted people, the Venice lagoon is the mirror in which is reflected Venice; its imagery and colors can be found throughout the city. Experiencing it means coming into contact with a soft and delicate intimacy.”

The Golden Goose ~ A Grimm's Brother Fairy Tale Stories for Kids

This is the classic fairy tale told by the Brothers Grimm of "The Golden Goose".  It is brought to you by Stories to Grow by.

Simpleton was the youngest of three brothers. Each brother chopped wood for a living. One day, the oldest brother went off to the forest where he met a dwarf.
"Please," said the dwarf, looking hungrily at the oldest brother's basket, "Won't you share your lunch with me?"
"Why should I?" snapped the oldest brother.
The next day the middle brother ventured to the forest to chop wood, and he met the same dwarf.
"Surely you'll share your lunch with me!" said the dwarf.
"Get your own," growled the middle brother, "and don't call me 'Shirley'."
On the third day the youngest brother went off into the forest to chop wood. Like his two older brothers, he met the same dwarf.
"I don't suppose you'd share your lunch with me," sighed the dwarf, casting his head down.
"Why not?" says Simpleton. "I'd like the company." And so the two of them ate happily together.
"I am going to tell you a secret," whispered the dwarf. "There's an oak tree by the river near a very large rock. Chop it down, and you will find among the roots something very fine."
Simpleton thanked the dwarf. He chopped down the tree, looked among the roots, and something bright sparkled in the sunlight. It was a goose - a goose with feathers made of pure gold!

The Maiden and the Boy Who Vanished ~ Fairy Tale Stories for Kids

Long, long ago there lived a very rich nobleman who had a wonderful baby boy. The night before his son was born, the father had a dream. He dreamt that the only way his son would reach adulthood would be if the child's feet never touched the earth until he was twelve years old.
Great care was taken that this should be avoided, and only trustworthy nurses were hired to look after the child. As the years passed, he was always diligently guarded. Sometimes he was carried in his nurses' arms, sometimes the servants carried him in a chair, but the boy's feet never touched the ground. So it passed until the child was nearly twelve years old.
Now when the child's twelfth birthday drew near, the father began to plan a magnificent feast to celebrate his son's release. One day while the preparations were in progress, a frightful noise, followed by most unearthly yells, shook the castle. In her terror, the nurse dropped the child and ran to the window. At that very instant the noises stopped.  On turning around to pick up the boy again, imagine her alarm when she found him no longer there! With a cry, she realized that she had disobeyed her master's orders. The child's feet had touched the floor, and now the child was gone.

The Golden Touch

This is the story of a very greedy rich man who chanced upon meeting a fairy. The fairy’s hair was caught in a few tree branches. Realising he had an opportunity to make even more money, he asked for a wish in return for helping the fairy. He said, ’All that I touch should turn to gold’, and his wish was granted by the grateful fairy.
The greedy man rushed home to tell his wife and daughter about his new boon, all the while touching stones and pebbles and converting them into gold. Once he got home, his daughter rushed to greet him. As soon as he bent down to scoop her up in his arms, she turned into a gold statue. He realized his folly and spent the rest of his days searching for the fairy to take away his wish.

What Are You Going To Do With That Hole

The first thing I would have thought if I came across one of my neighbors digging a hole this size is that they have plans for an in-ground swimming pool. Frankly, even if it was just a giant swimming pool, I think his entire neighborhood would be jealous.
However, Wayne decided to fill that hole with something more than water. After laying down some gravel, he brought in something that definitely doesn’t fit in any pool. Neighbors quickly took notice once Wayne brought a 20-foot shipping container onto his lawn.

Obamas Acquire Book Critical of Trump as First Netflix Project The Obamas’ production company has acquired the rights to the Michael Lewis book “The Fifth Risk.” Credit Jim Young/Agence France-Presse — Getty Images Image

Former President Barack Obama’s production company has bought the rights to the Michael Lewis book “The Fifth Risk,” its first known acquisition since it signed a deal with Netflix in May.
Lewis made the announcement on a Katie Couric podcast episode that aired on Thursday. Deadline reported the acquisition earlier this week.
“The Fifth Risk” tracks the messy transition from the Obama administration to the one headed by President Trump, as inexperienced appointees take over important bureaucratic jobs. In particular, the book examines what Lewis says was the bungling of day-to-day operations at the Agriculture, Commerce and Energy departments.

Striking it rich? Why more ecommerce companies are developing an appetite for IPOs

E-commerce companies in India backed by venture capitalists and high net-worth individuals have started to make a beeline to the stock market for a public listing, and this could be an encouraging sign for the sector struggling to visualize an exit route.
The first Indian pure-play e-commerce company to be listed on the stock exchanges was Infibeam in 2016 and today, there are two more — Indiamart and SaleBhai—that have filed their prospectus for an initial public offering (IPO).
The move to list on the bourses could augur well for e-commerce companies in India, which are struggling to find an exit route, and this is more true for companies that are smaller in size and receive a lesser amount of funding.
